Mathew 16:17-19, "Jesus replied, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatsoever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatsoever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
Questions:
1. Why, in your authoritative opinion, was the name Simon changed to Peter?
2. Where now are those symbolic keys that Jesus gave to Simon?
3. If the gates of hades could not prevail against the Church that Christ built, then where is that church now?

Thanks, Deacon7, for the enlightenment. And where is that Church now?

Re: Re: Re: The Keys of the Kingdom
You ask, "Where is that church now?"...one could be deceived to believe that today the Gates of Hades prevail because of the evil we hear of...but let us remember that the "church" is an extension of each one of us who has been given free will by a loving God. It is up to each of us to keep the church in us alive by making choices of good and not evil, to set examples of Christ's love for us for others to see, to bring the church to everyone -wherever we are. The church is not just a building...it is in our spirits...it is the love of Jesus in us. If we show this love as "One", or as a "Body", then the Gates of Hades cannot prevail, for we are using our gifts of kindness, compassion, friendship, as a witness to a hurting world. "Greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world".

I too don't believe that the gates of hades can prevail. May I ask to be clarified of the follo9wing:
1. Who said that the church is an extension of each of us? What is your source or reference for that statement?
2. Who shall make the final say as to what is good and what is evil?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: The Keys of the Kingdom
My comment that the church is an extension of each of us is my interpretation that because God has breathed life into us, and that the church's purpose is to glorify and worship him, then what we do with our lives will either serve Him and glorify Him, or bear false witness to him because we have been given a free will by our loving Father. To me, the church is not just a building with walls, but is a breathing, living entity that has the responsibility to carry out the mission of Christ. I believe that the answer to who will judge good and evil has already been given in the word of God. The Book of Revelations particularly predicts judgement for those who have not followed the word of God, and the law as given to Moses in The Ten Commandments is a cornerstone for how we should live our lives. Many say that the Holy Bible is open to interpretation, and I often have difficulty in understanding certain passages, however it seems clear to me that God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit will offer that final judgment according to His written word in our precious Bible.

Re: The Keys of the Kingdom
The only keys of the kingdom that Peter ever used were the words of the gospel that he preached, since the keys are symbolic they represent the words of life which can either save or destroy depending on whether they are accepted or rejected.
The Church, which is the body of Christ is everywhere two or three are gathered in his name.
Your brother in Christ,
Willhard
