History of St Patricks Day
From: johnsprague3 | Created: Feb 28, 2009

History of
Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá 'le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially is the feast day which annually celebrates Saint Patrick (386-493), the patron saint of Ireland, on March 17. It is a national holiday in the Republic of Ireland (a bank holiday in Northern Ireland).

Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated worldwide by Irish people and increasingly by many of non-Irish descent. Celebrations are generally themed around all things green and Irish; both Christians and non-Christians celebrate the secular version of the holiday by wearing green, eating Irish food, imbibing Irish drink, and attending parades. The St. Patrick's Day parade in Dublin, Ireland is part of a five day festival, with over 500,000 people attending the 2006 parade. The largest St. Patrick's Day parade is held in New York City and it is watched by 2 million spectators. The St. Patrick's day parade was first held in New York City on 17 March, 1756 when Irish soldiers marched through the city. Parades also take place in other Irish towns and villages. Other large parades include those in Belfast, Manchester, Birmingham, London, Coatbridge, Montreal, Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, Savannah, Pittsburgh, Denver, Sacramento, Scranton and Toronto. Large parades also take place in other places throughout Europe and the Americas, as well as Australia and Asia. Be sure to have some green beer on that day. Cheers from The Cracker Barrell Pub

Weather is getting Cooler: Mix Your Highballs Inside!
From: johnsprague3 | Created: Sep 23, 2008

Mixing a Highball

Since most of your drinks are highballs: Scotch and Water, Vodka and OJ, Rum and Coke, Gin and Tonic or that occational Long Island Ice Tea, you better set up your private bar inside where it's warm. Be sure to use the correct glass for the concoction. With a highball, use a highball glass etc. There will be room for about 5 ozs of liquid along with your ice.
With your highball glass and ice firmly in hand, pour one and a half ounces of liquor into the glass.

Measuring the quantity with a jigger or 1.5 oz shot glass

After pouring the alcohol, add the mixer to the drink. The mixer will usually be a carbonated drink but may be orange juice, water, or just about anything else.  If the base is carbonated, then the drink is done - the bubbles will mix the drink for you.  Indeed, mixing a carbonated drink will reduce the bubbles. If the mixer is not carbonated, it's your responsibility to either stir the drink with your bar spoon or to add a straw or stirrer to the drink for the drinker to use.

All that remains is the addition of the garnish.  Most highballs won't call for one, but you should feel welcome to add cherries to sweet drinks or lemon or lime peels to drinks with a citrus base.
