Andrew Jackson SMITH & Silver
In this photo:
Description:My great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson SMITH, was born and raised in the horseflesh state of Kentucky, in a little town called Sherburne (10/25/1860-8/5/1946). He loved horses, and bred, traded, sold, and trained them. While visiting my grandmother's house (his daughter) around 1976, I found some materials in her attic in a tin. They were commendation letters from some horse people in the area, thanking him for the stud services. Also in the tin were several small notebooks, one of which I still have. It was a record of which sire and mare produced which foal, and who he sold which horse to, and for what amount. When I can, I'll post some scans form it. Though I never met my great-grandfather, I am thrilled and proud to have these artifacts from his life. (This photo belongs to some of my cousins in Maryland and Ohio.)

Thanks so much for the very nice comments, Ruth. You are very fortunate to have worked with horses. In my dreams, I will end up spending the last third of my life doing that. That would really be coming full circle--to have it in my blood from my ancestors, and to end up returning to it from a very urban upbringing. Hope springs eternal!

Donella, I know right where one of the books is, but just have to dig it out. As soon as I get it scanned, I'll post the cover and a few pages. Btw, aren't some of your people from Austin? I ask because one of the colleges my grandmother attended was there. It was Sam Huston College, and she graduated in the class of '27 or '29.

I love this picture!!! I would also like to see some of the notes he had when he bred and sold horses.

Thank you. I do not know, because although I inherited the love of horses, unfortunately I did not also inherit the knowledge of them. lol Perhaps some of the horse people here may be able to offer some info.

I understand that you are proud of your great-grandfather ! Do you know the breed of the horse on the photo ? Must be a Tennessee Walking Horse, or an American Saddlebred. Great horse, anyway.
