If the father of the child in question is available, it is highly recommended to take a paternity test. DNA tests that directly investigate the parent-child relationship are generally more conclusive and more powerful than a DNA Sibling Test.

Technical Info

A Sibling DNA Test can be used to determine the likelihood that two people are related as full siblings, half siblings, or not related at all. This test analyzes buccal (cheek) cells taken using simple mouth swabs from each person participating in the test. These cells contain unique sets of genetic information known as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The laboratory amplifies the specific regions of their DNA and compares them for patterns. Sibling Test results provide a “full sibling index” and “half sibling index” which demonstrate how likely the tested individuals are related as siblings. However unlike paternity testing between a father and child, this type of DNA analysis may not always provide a conclusive answer, so it’s best used when the alleged parents are not available to take a paternity (father) or maternity (mother) test.

FAQ

Yes, the kit can be split and the sample collection components sent to each address separately. The collection components are individually barcoded, and will be tested together once the samples arrive at the laboratory. To order a split kit, please write the following into the Order notes box of the online order form “Please split kit”. Please also indicate the name and address to send each component. For example, please state “send the Alleged Father’s portion to… (specify name and address)” and “send the Child’s portion to… (specify name and address)”.

Legal sibling testing requires you to attend an appointment for sample collection. If you need a legal sibling test, purchase this kit and follow the enclosed instructions to pay the difference and switch to legal sibling testing. Legal sibling testing is available in the US, Canada and UK.

No. The DNA sibling tests can be performed on individuals of any age, even newborns. If the patient is a minor, the legal guardian must sign the DNA sibling testing consent form.

If the mother already knows that she is the biological mother of a child, then there is no need to test her if only the alleged father is in question. A conclusive answer can be obtained without testing the mother.

All DNA test kits are stored at room temperature before and after sample collection.

DNA is collected by rubbing a brush gently inside the mouth against the cheek for 15 seconds. The collection is safe and painless.
