The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested.
This 4th generation HIV test looks for for both antibodies and antigens in your blood. Antibodies are proteins that fight the virus and antigens are proteins that make up most of the virus. This test can detect HIV even when the antibody levels are low, so it’s important to get tested as part of your regular STD screening. If you don’t know if you have HIV, you could spread it to someone else.
It’s important to get tested for HIV, even if you don’t have any signs or symptoms. This is because you can have HIV for a long time without knowing it and its symptoms could also be mistaken for other illnesses.
What is the process of the HIV Test?
A small blood sample is collected from a finger prick in the privacy of your own home. This sample is mailed to our lab using the prepaid envelope inside the kit.
Upon arrival at our lab, the blood sample is analyzed using a fully automated antigen/antibody combination test (4th generation test) to detect the presence of the HIV p24 antigen and antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2.
This 4th generation test reduces the window period post-exposure to around 18–45 days, compared to a window period that is routinely longer than three months for rapid HIV tests that only detect HIV antibodies.
What's Tested?
HIV
HIV is a virus that can damage the immune system and make it hard for the body to fight off infections. HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, but it can also be spread by sharing needles or from mother to baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.
Symptoms of HIV may not appear right away, but they can include fever, fatigue, and swollen glands. Some people may not have any symptoms at all. The only way to know for sure if you have HIV is to get tested. There is no cure for HIV, but there are medications that can help people with HIV live long and healthy lives.
If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, it’s important to get tested to prevent the spread of the infection and help you start treatment sooner.
